על פי נתוני הלשכה המרכזית לסטטיסטיקה (נכון ל- 2011), עוברים (תקועים) על הכביש שבין נתניה לחדרה, כ– 90,000 כלי רכב בממוצע ביממה.
בשעות השיא תקועים על הכביש היום למעלה מ- 3500 כלי רכב בשעה לכיוון אחד (למעלה מ- 7,000 כלי רכב בשני הכיוונים).
במהלך השנים שבין 2003-2015 נפגעו בתאונות דרכים בקטע זה 638 בני אדם, מהם 16 בני אדם נהרגו, ו-36 נפצעו קשה.
על פי התחזיות, יגדל מספר כלי הרכב בכ- 3% לשנה.
כלומר, בשנת 2020 יהיו תקועים כ- 122,000 כלי רכב ביממה, ובשנת 2025 למעלה מ- 140,000.
ובשעת השיא יהיו תקועים בשנת 2020 כ- 5,200 כלי רכב בשעה, ובשנת 2025 למעלה מ- 6,000 לכיוון אחד (12,000 לשני הכיוונים).
המשמעות: בכל שנה יותר פקקי תנועה ויותר תאונות דרכים, יותר בזבוז דלק, יותר זיהום אויר, יותר רעש…
צריך היה לפתח את התחבורה הציבורית לפני הרבה שנים, אבל לא פיתחו. המצב היום הוא, שגם אם תפותח תשתית הרכבת, יקח שנים רבות עד שתהיה רכבת נורמלית. ובינתיים הפקקים יחמירו, ואיתם יהיו יותר תאונות, ויותר אנשים יפגעו מזיהום אויר.
הפתרון: במקביל לפיתוח הרכבת – להוסיף גם נתיב לכלי רכב, וגם נתיב לתחבורה ציבורית.
השאלה היא איפה יעברו כל הנתיבים: האם בצמוד למסילת הרכבת, או באמצע פארק השרון?
